Larimer County awarded $2.1 million to expand landfill methane collection system

Larimer County staff told the Board of County Commissioners on July 13 that the county’s landfill has received a $2,100,000 grant to expand its methane‑collection system.
"They got that, dollars 2,100,000 grant awarded to expand that methane collection system," said Abby Stapleton, sustainability coordinator in the Office of Sustainability and Climate. Stapleton said the project team will put the system out to bid this year and expects permitting, design and construction to take two to three years.
Stapleton said the expansion will increase coverage from roughly one‑third of the landfill to nearly the entire site as parts of the landfill close, improving capture rates. Potential end uses discussed include converting collected methane to vehicle fuel or piping it into buildings, but Stapleton emphasized the county must first quantify volumes collected to determine feasible uses.
No funding source or awarding agency was named in the presentation; county staff said grant administration and project procurement steps are next. Commissioners asked for continued updates as procurement and design proceed.
