The Williams Township Board of Supervisors on June 10 authorized advertisement of a public hearing to consider amendments to the Township’s bamboo ordinance (Ordinance 2026-02), which Solicitor Colby Grim said would clarify enforcement procedures and raise penalties.
Grim told the board the proposed changes would classify planting bamboo as an automatic summary offense, allow the Township to send a removal notice and, if the bamboos are not removed within 20 days, pursue separate offenses against the property owner. The draft also includes increased fines, Grim said.
Vice Chair Raymond Abert moved to authorize advertisement of a public hearing on the amendment; George Washburn seconded and the motion carried 2-0.
Why it matters: bamboo can spread beyond property lines and create maintenance and encroachment problems; the amendment would give the Township clearer enforcement tools and higher penalties to encourage compliance.
Next steps: the Township will advertise the public hearing and staff will circulate the proposed ordinance language for public review ahead of the hearing.
