Fairview Area Schools board approves 2026-27 calendar, several field trips, MASB planning contract and awards $76,248.57 roof bid

At its April 13 regular meeting, the Fairview Area Schools Board of Education approved the 2026–27 school calendar, several student field trips, a strategic-planning contract with the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB), and awarded a garage roof contract.
Trustee Alchin moved to approve the 2026–27 school calendar and Trustee Miron seconded; the motion passed 6-0. The board also approved multiple field trips: seniors to Moran Iron Works in Onaway on April 17 (career fair and tour), 4th- and 5th-grade Star Base Science visits to Alpena on April 30, May 7, May 14, May 21 and May 28, and a 3rd-grade and high-school science class trip to Alpena to release salmon. Those trips passed on motions by Alchin with seconds by Wnuk or Miron, each recorded 6-0.
The board voted 6-0 to contract with MASB for a three- to five-year strategic planning process at a cost of $8,438.60 (motion by Alchin, second Handrich).
Earlier in the meeting the Building and Maintenance Committee recommended awarding the garage roof bid to Grindstone Contracting for $76,248.57; the board approved that award on a motion by Handrich, second Wnuk, 6-0.
On the consent agenda the board approved the Feb. 9 meeting minutes on a 5-1 vote (motion by Trustee Wnuk, second Alchin) with Trustee Wnuk recorded as the lone no vote despite having made the motion. The treasurer’s report had been pulled for separate consideration and, after the business manager’s financial presentation, the treasurer’s report was approved by a 5-1 vote with Trustee Wnuk recorded as the recorded no vote. Administrative written reports were approved 6-0.
Several policies (0100, 1410, 2370.01, 8120.09, 4210 replacing 3120.09 with 4120.09 deleted, 6320, 6350, 8402, 8655) were included in the packet for first reading; Superintendent evaluation Part B (community relations) was presented for discussion. The board noted several upcoming events including the Eagle Spirit Auction Dinner on April 18 and the Science Olympiad state competition April 24–25 at Michigan State University. The meeting adjourned at 7:52 p.m.
