Resident Rob Christie raised an ongoing concern about the Emmons Smith Fund at the Select Board meeting May 18, asking whether the town could use some of its legal funds to pursue recovery of monies he believes were wrongly redirected to a now-closed hospital in Maine.
Christie said the Emmons Smith Committee has spent its appropriated funds on attorneys and that a second attorney recommended sending demand letters to the hospital and trustees to seek redistribution of funds to the Emmons Smith Fund. Selectman Lavoie and Selectman Rideout emphasized the committee should first use its remaining appropriated funds for the recommended letters and that the committee must agree to any arrangement that would obligate the town to advance funds for recovery. Lavoie said she could not commit town legal funds while the town is managing current legal expenses.
The board asked Christie to return to the committee and urged the Emmons Smith Committee to send the demand letters with its appropriated funds; the board did not authorize town legal funds at the meeting.
