Broken Bow council adopts 2023–24 budget, sets final tax and approves wage ordinance

The council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 1271, the Annual Appropriation Bill, after suspending the statutory rule requiring three readings. Councilmember David Baltz moved for final passage and Councilmember Paul Holland seconded; the roll call vote recorded Baltz, Holland, Chris Myers and Russ Smith in favor. The mayor signed the ordinance and the clerk attested its passage.
Council also approved Resolution 2023‑12, which authorizes an additional 1% to restricted funds, and later approved Resolution 2023‑13, which sets the city’s final property tax request for 2023–24. Both resolutions passed on unanimous roll call votes.
In a separate but related action the council opened and closed a public hearing on Ordinance No. 1272, the 2023–24 wage ordinance, and voted to adopt the ordinance after suspending the three‑reading requirement; the motion carried on a unanimous roll call.
The meeting minutes record Mayor Sonnichsen thanking city staff for their work on the budget. City Administrator David Schmidt singled out Treasurer Jennifer Waterhouse and CPA Jeff Oeltjen for assistance with budget preparation, and Councilmember Paul Holland thanked Police Chief Steve Scott for his diligence on a separate nuisance‑property matter discussed that night.
