Montello committee gets updates on hydro dam inspection, Church Street WisDOT timeline, school-zone signs and several road issues

At the Feb. 11 Montello Public Works meeting, staff provided updates on several infrastructure items including a dam inspection, state road project timelines and local road safety measures.
On the hydroelectric dam inspection dating to January 2024, Public Works staff member Michael Kohnke said he and the dam owner are preparing a draft report and expect to provide a copy to the committee and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources by next month.
Regarding the 2027 WisDOT Church Street project, staff said funding numbers are due to WisDOT by April so DOT can determine the route. DOT representatives are scheduled to survey and stake the corridor this spring, and a public meeting is expected in late summer.
Traffic-safety work was also discussed: DOT observed the school stop sign issue by the trailer park and has ordered lighted signs to be installed between 3rd Street and County F; the city will pay for installation. In addition, committee members noted sand accumulation near the Family Dollar and agreed Kohnke will send a third letter to the property owner.
Members raised the condition of County Y/Park Street in front of the courthouse; two letters have been sent to the county and Chair Ken Streich said he has spoken with the county board chair but the county has not repaired the road. The committee also discussed E. Montello Street, where heaving has been reported; DOT said it will wait until frost conditions ease to see whether the road settles before scheduling repairs.
No formal votes were recorded on these items; the updates were entered for committee follow-up.
