Montello Public Works approves comp time, driveway permit and flags water-loss, frozen-pipe concerns

The City of Montello Public Works committee met Feb. 11, 2026, and approved routine personnel time and reporting as well as a driveway permit while discussing operational concerns about water loss and winter damage.
Committee Chair Ken Streich called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Members present were Brian Schrimpf, Ron Knutson, Bill Faulkner and Dick Dufour. A motion by Committee member Ron Knutson, seconded by Committee member Brian Schrimpf, to approve comp time and the monthly reports carried.
Public Works staff raised operational concerns including enzymes and grease entering the storm or sanitary system, frozen pipes at vacant buildings and an observable loss of water that staff said they are investigating for leaks.
On a separate agenda item, the committee approved a driveway permit for property at W3206 Fern Ave. The parcel, purchased adjacent to the landfill, could not receive a duplicate Fern street number so a fire number was assigned; the committee discussed building plans and confirmed the parcel will remain in city limits. Committee member Dick Dufour moved to approve the driveway permit; Committee member Brian Schrimpf seconded and the motion carried.
Members also discussed road maintenance priorities tied to winter frost, and noted DOT guidance on delaying certain repairs until frost thaws to determine whether surfaces settle.
The committee scheduled its next regular meeting for March 11, 2026, and adjourned at 7:25 p.m. A motion to adjourn by Brian Schrimpf, seconded by Dick Dufour, carried.
