Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session prioritizes Friendship Road repairs, SPLOST planning and an HB581 informational push

County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners during the Jan. 27 work session that budget season is beginning and that staff would circulate letters about hearing dates. Weaver asked the commission to direct staff to place cemetery bylaws and a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) process review on a future work session and to invite the Planning & Zoning board to participate. Commissioners agreed to consider an evening meeting on Feb. 24 to allow broader public participation.
Weaver also recommended using 2024 LMIG funds to address immediate road needs on Friendship Road; commissioners agreed to add Friendship Road and other road projects to future work-session agendas. Commissioner Jason Frost inquired about Liberty Hill Road; County Manager Weaver said it is adjacent to Friendship Road and related in repair planning.
The work session packet and discussion said officials will prepare an informational flyer for the public about HB581 and the county’s intent to remain opted in, noting that a special election on a sales tax question will likely be scheduled this November. The manager asked staff to prepare informational materials for public distribution and return to the commission with scheduling details.
Department heads provided operational updates: recreation director Mordie Askew reported seasonal sports and staffing needs; code enforcement and permit updates were provided by Samantha Hedgecoke; public-works items included a failing water-tower floor to be replaced and completed fiber locates; animal-control reported an uptick in stray dogs. The manager also reported two recent promotions in public works (Toby to mechanic, Wes to foreman).
The work session entered executive session to discuss legal, personnel and real-estate matters and reconvened before adjourning.
What happens next: Staff will prepare the CUP-process review with Planning & Zoning, schedule public hearings and distribute information on HB581 and the upcoming special election timeline. Road repair scheduling and LMIG/SPLOST coordination will be added to the next agendas.
Votes and motions: the work session included a unanimous vote to enter executive session and a unanimous reconvening; specific votes on LMIG use and the other items were treated as agenda planning and will return to the commission for formal action.
