The Presque Isle Planning Board on June 18 voted 6-1 to table a City Council request to expand the Retail Business Zone (RBZ) from Main Street to Carmichael Street along the north side of Davis Street until the council provides additional clarification.
The board first considered a motion to deny the request, moved by Bruce Roope, but that motion failed for lack of a second. Ward Gerow moved to table the item, and Vice Chair Tim Vernon seconded; the motion passed with Roope casting the lone vote against tabling.
Board members said the proposed rezoning would convert lots currently in an Urban Residential Zone (URZ) into RBZ parcels. Several members described the request as potential spot zoning to accommodate a single owner seeking to sell and a prospective buyer who wants to place business offices in the existing building. "I felt that the previous directive from the City Council was to develop more housing within the City of Presque Isle and that this request went against that directive," Bruce Roope said.
Chair Andy Flewelling said the board would seek clarification from the City Council before taking further action. No implementation timetable was provided at the meeting.
The board’s action leaves the proposed expansion on hold; the item will return to the board when the City Council supplies the requested clarification or additional information.
