Resident urges Elkhart officials to track and push back on regional data center developments

Nikisha said many residents oppose data centers and warned they can have negative consequences for property values, water supplies and air quality. "Nobody wants them except the people who don't have to live with the fallout afterwards with their property values, with their electric bills, and most important with their water supply, their air quality, and their peace," Nikisha said. She urged commission members to attend meetings in neighboring jurisdictions and to speak up, arguing that decisions outside city limits can affect Elkhart and its redevelopment work.
Chair (speaker 2) responded that the city has zoning policy in place that addresses such matters and encouraged awareness of the issue. No formal action or motion followed from the public comment.
The comment reflects local public concern about regional industrial development and potential environmental impacts; commissioners did not take formal action at the meeting but staff and other local bodies may be engaged on the topic going forward.
