During the meeting's public comment period, Nikisha urged the Elkhart Redevelopment Commission to closely monitor and respond to data-center proposals appearing in nearby Bristol and New Carlisle, arguing that local communities will be affected by decisions made elsewhere.
"Whatever happens in the county affects the city and vice versa," Nikisha said, and asked commissioners to "track what is happening with these matters in Bristol and New Carlisle" because the region has "a lot of water and a lot of land." She strongly criticized industry assurances and incentives, saying residents bear long-term costs while corporations reap profits. "Nobody wants them except the people who don't have to live with the fallout afterwards with their property values, with their electric bills, and most important with their water supply, their air quality," she said.
Nikisha urged the commission and other local bodies to attend hearings and to listen to public concerns, arguing that the silence of local scientists, small business owners and residents in favor of data centers should be "deafening." Chair responded that the city's zoning policy includes provisions to address such issues in the future.
The comment was made during the meeting's public-comment period; commissioners did not take formal action on data centers at the July 14 meeting.
