Kodiak Island Borough mayor appoints Mark Anthony Viscocho to assembly

The Kodiak Island Borough mayor reopened a meeting at 8:11 p.m. and opened nominations for an assembly appointment, and Assembly Member Whiteside nominated Mark Anthony Viscocho, Alexander Sweeney, Caleb Callahan and Sean Brecki. After secret-ballot rounds, the clerk announced that Mark Anthony Viscocho received a majority and was elected to the assembly.
The clerk reported first-round totals showing Viscocho with three votes, Brecki one and Sweeney one; with no majority the clerk said candidates with the fewest votes would be dropped and a second round held. On the second ballot the clerk announced Viscocho received four votes and Brecki one, which the clerk confirmed was a majority, and the presiding official congratulated Viscocho on his election.
Borough Clerk Nova Javier administered the oath of office. Clerk Javier led the appointee in repeating the oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, the constitution of the state of Alaska, and the ordinances of the Kodiak Island Borough," and to "honestly, faithfully and impartially discharge my duties as a member of the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly." When asked, the clerk said Viscocho's term begins after the meeting and staff will follow up to schedule an orientation.
A caller who identified herself as Carly offered brief public comment praising the pool of applicants and encouraging the assembly to welcome the new member, saying, "we have some pretty amazing candidates, and I hope to see some of them sitting up there." Assembly members took turns thanking applicants and urging them to run in the October election; Assembly Member Gardner said he looks "forward to see how much the other three of you can do for the community come this October."
The assembly announced its next work session on Thursday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m. and its next regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Borough Assembly Chambers. Assembly Member Whiteside moved to adjourn; the motion was seconded and the meeting was adjourned by voice vote.
