Mayor Patricia Williams told the Milton Town Council on Feb. 7 that staff found records indicating the town does not own local cemeteries.
"The Town of Milton had sold the cemeteries to the Milton Women Club on May 25, 1971," Mayor Williams said, and she said the town will notify the insurance company about the finding and adjust records as needed. She added a copy of the deed is in the meeting folders and that staff will continue studying the document.
The mayor presented the deed disclosure during her report alongside other items including LED street-lighting scheduled for Community Circle and an update on revised flood‑plain maps. The council did not take a formal vote on cemetery ownership at the meeting but directed staff to notify the insurer and follow up with further review.
The town will report any changes to liability coverage after the deed review is complete.
