Milton officials brief board on economic-development outreach, Golden Leaf project submissions and broadband progress

Mayor Patricia Williams said she and Town Clerk Shirley Wilson met with the North Carolina Department of Commerce Main Street and Rural Planning Center; the town should receive an economic-development assessment for Broad Street at the end of September. She also reported attending an International Economic Development Council meeting in Yanceyville to prepare recommendations for the Pelham Industrial Park.
Mayor Williams and staff met July 10 with representatives of Withers Ravenel to discuss preparation of a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) and an Asset Management Plan (AMP); a follow-up meeting was scheduled Aug. 1. Deputy County Manager Melissa Williamson reported that county staff submitted initial project worksheets to Golden Leaf on July 10 and expect to submit the final project list by Aug. 10; Golden Leaf is expected to review applications and award funds Feb. 1, 2024. Williamson also said Spectrum has been awarded coverage for 606 addresses in the county and that she will meet with the company next week.
Williamson additionally noted that DRF awarded the CEAD program $2 million and that two projects, PCC and Caswell County Cooperative Extension, were among those received by the county. The board recorded election results for the county EDC: Alvin Foster as chairperson, Laura Picardo as vice chairperson and Shirley Wilson as secretary.
No formal action on these items was recorded beyond the updates and the EDC election results.
