Regional planning official previews 'Year of the Trail' toolkit to Milton residents

Jesse Day, planning director for the Piedmont Triad Regional Council, spoke to the Milton Town Board on Oct. 11 about the North Carolina Legislature’s designation of 2023 as the 'Year of the Trail' and what it could mean for small towns.
Day said the campaign’s concept is for events across all 100 counties to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1973 North Carolina Trail System Act. He outlined a toolkit to help towns advertise and plan trail-related activities, noted an increase in trail usage since the COVID-19 pandemic, and said dedicated state and federal funding streams exist though federal funds typically require matching dollars.
Day described potential next steps for Milton, including engaging regional trail agencies and applying for feasibility-study funds when they are released. Jillian Medlin, director of the Piedmont Triad Visitors Center, volunteered to serve as a local point of contact and offered further assistance and outreach support.
Mayor Patricia Williams also previewed the town’s Oct. 15 Thomas Day Art Walk and said organizers would present details during the public-comment portion of the meeting. Karen Williamson provided a logistics update on vendors, performances, and volunteer needs for the event.
The board did not take formal action on trail-related funding at the meeting; Jesse Day said he would follow up on feasibility-funding opportunities.
