The Keokuk City Council approved a legal services agreement with Asplemeyer Fish Power Engberg & Helling, PLC to provide municipal legal services after City Attorney James Dennis retired.
Jim (speaker 1) explained the change followed Dennis's retirement and that the firm — with Brent Reuther as the primary attorney handling much of the work — was recommended after discussion with existing counsel. Jim said some citation or ticket prosecution historically handled under local ordinance sometimes defaults to the county attorney and that Brent Reuther typically defers such prosecutions; the city will continue to assess whether additional local prosecution capacity is needed.
Council approved the resolution by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize the engagement with the firm and confirm service scope and points of contact.
