Ashley Manson announced the Montreat Landcare Festival and Arbor Day celebration scheduled for Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moore Field. Manson said the event will feature plant nurseries, local artists, food vendors such as Round Mountain Creamery and Little Jaybird Farm, and educational programs including presentations on Flat Creek Crossing, certified wildlife habitat and Hellbender Salamanders from Montreat College.
During public comment, Shirley Mitchell, a 30‑year resident, honored the memory of Gene Shuford and asked the commissioners to add the phrase "whereas trees are created by God through Jesus Christ and bring him glory" to the Arbor Day proclamation so the document would acknowledge the spiritual significance of trees. Mitchell also reminded commissioners that their service should be oriented toward serving the Lord Christ and referenced biblical passages during her remarks.
The requests were made during the public comment period and no formal change to the Arbor Day proclamation was recorded during the forum. Commissioners adjourned the public forum and planned to reconvene at the regular meeting at 6:00 p.m., where staff or the board may consider how to respond to the request.
