Assembly authorizes $75,000 tourism contract and approves two-year animal-control agreement

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly on July 16 authorized two contracts: a $75,000 annual contract with the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau (doing business as Discover Kodiak) to provide destination marketing and tourism-development services (contract FY2027-11), and a two-year animal-control services contract with the City of Kodiak (contract FY2027-13) covering July 1, 2026–June 30, 2028 for $156,903 in year one and $160,826 in year two.
Manager Williams said the Discover Kodiak contract is funded from the borough accommodations tax and that the $75,000 amount was approved in the FY2027 budget. "This is from an accommodations tax," Williams told the assembly, explaining the borough receives the 5% accommodations tax for short-term rentals outside the city limits.
Assembly member Woods praised Discover Kodiak’s responsiveness, saying he’s "noticed a significant uptick in responsiveness" and thanked the bureau's staff for being available to answer questions. On the animal-control contract, Williams said the code authorizes partnering with the City of Kodiak and that part of the contract funds the humane society.
Both motions were adopted on roll-call votes recorded as 5-0.
