Galesburg council keeps water rates steady, hears staff reports and routine election appointments

At its July 6 meeting the Galesburg City Council heard routine staff reports, approved several standard items and voted to keep water rates unchanged for the coming year.
Deputy Gallagher reviewed the police report, saying the department handled 74 citizen-initiated calls and 133 officer-initiated calls last month, and noted continued traffic enforcement on Battle Creek Street. Fire Chief Roomsburg and Lieutenant Bryan Free reported the department has run 286 calls so far this year, up from 256 this time last year, and that all cadets recently completed the academy; the department has ordered radios that now require programming.
DPW Technician Bryan Free told the council the M96 project experienced valve issues but water shutoff and tie-in work was completed; the Water Main Loop project is nearly finished with one back tee left to install and the East Michigan Project is expected to start storm sewer work and paving scheduled to begin Aug. 19. The city reported 108 Miss Dig requests last month.
On policy and routine business, Roger Frazee moved to keep the city’s water rates the same for the year, citing sewer-rate savings from Kalamazoo and guidance from the accounting firm recommending annual, modest increases; the motion carried unanimously on roll call. Council also approved Resolution 20260706 to appoint election inspectors and Resolution 20260706A to appoint a receiving board; both passed on unanimous roll-call votes.
A request from Steve Phillips to rename the Community Park to Gary Allen Park was discussed and rejected by the council; Ryan Harnden made the motion to retain the current name and Anthony Tipken seconded. Carol Wortinger moved approval of the consent agenda earlier in the meeting, and the agenda itself was approved at the opening of the session.
In council comments, members discussed school plans for a new transportation building and other local items, the DDA’s wall of honor project and board vacancies, and a new downtown breakfast restaurant, Cozy Clover, planned to take the former Valentina’s space. Roger Frazee referenced veteran suicide statistics in his remarks; that figure was presented as a comment rather than a council action.
Mayor Linda Marble adjourned the meeting at 7:03 p.m.
