Palos Park proclaims Aug. 27 as ‘Hero Day’ to honor first responders

The Palos Park Village Council adopted Resolution R2026‑R08 on July 13, proclaiming Aug. 27, 2026 — and each Aug. 27 thereafter — as Hero Day in the village to honor law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, telecommunicators and other first responders.
Mayor Melinda Walters read the resolution in full, citing the 100 Club of Illinois and the organization’s six decades of work providing immediate financial assistance to families following line‑of‑duty deaths and ongoing survivor and wellness support. The resolution directs the village clerk to transmit a copy to the 100 Club of Illinois and encourages local observances and ceremonies.
Commissioner Vincent, who the mayor noted serves on the 100 Club board, made brief remarks about personal experience with the organization; he said his father was killed in the line of duty in 1983 and that the 100 Club provides immediate financial assistance (Mr. Vincent said the organization historically provided $50,000 in immediate support to families after a line‑of‑duty death). Vincent urged his colleagues to vote in favor of the proclamation.
Vincent moved to adopt the resolution and a second was offered. The clerk called the roll and the council approved the resolution by unanimous vote. Council members encouraged municipalities and community organizations to mark Hero Day with ceremonies and educational activities.
