Board adopts new rules, chair term change and raises commissioner pay

The Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 11 approved a package of governance and compensation changes.
The board unanimously adopted Resolution #24-12-16, which sets the rules of organization and procedure for 2025, including committee structure (Finance and Administration; Health & Human Services; Public Safety & Courts; Economic & Physical Development), public comment rules, and incorporation of Michigan’s Open Meetings Act and Robert’s Rules of Order.
Separately, the board adopted Resolution #24-12-12 to revert to the statutory default of electing the board chairperson in odd-numbered years for a two-year term rather than electing annually.
On compensation, the board approved Resolution #24-12-15 to align meeting compensation across boards and to set updated annual salaries: County Board Chair $13,000; County Board Vicechair $12,500; County Commissioner $12,000; Road Commissioner $10,000. The per-meeting schedule and mileage at the IRS rate were included. That compensation motion passed with a recorded vote of 6 yeas and 1 nay (Commissioner Johnson cast the sole recorded no vote). Motions were moved and seconded as recorded in the meeting minutes.
The new rules and compensation schedule will take effect as specified in the adopted resolutions and will apply to appointments and meeting compensation beginning in 2025.
