DNCR to undertake major maintenance on Farmington rail trail; board flags Route 11 corridor development as a planning concern

Planning Director Kyle Pimental reported that the New Hampshire Department of Natural and Cultural Resources will carry out substantial maintenance on the Farmington rail trail—the most comprehensive work in roughly 20–25 years—including ditching, resurfacing and clearing across sections near Collins and Aikman and toward Spaulding High School. Board members confirmed maintenance work had been visible to frequent trail users.

Director Pimental also warned that several large parcels near Route 11 have generated preliminary developer interest and could lead to additional trail crossings or degraded user experience if parcels are developed independently. The town’s access management provisions encourage rear access roads and shared curb cuts, but are difficult to implement when parcels do not develop in coordination. DNCR controls trail crossings through a special use permit process; board members noted that process can be demanding and potentially cost‑prohibitive for smaller projects. Staff will continue to monitor conceptual applications in the Route 11 area and report back to the board.
