Superintendent Kristin Perkowski updated the Labor & Policy Committee on ongoing collaboration with Muskegon Community College and local employers to better align student skills with area manufacturing needs.
Perkowski said she and GHAPS administrators have met with Dr. Selmon, President of Muskegon Community College (MCC), and his team since December to coordinate short‑ and long‑term goals and identify alignment opportunities for GHAPS students and community members. Perkowski said district staff are researching current graduate skill needs in local manufacturing.
Perkowski said Evink recently hosted area manufacturers to discuss possibilities for a work‑based school program. Jason Reinecke is working with the Chamber, Shape and MCC to consider local job descriptions and how the district — with the support of a new teacher and MCC — can prepare students for local manufacturing roles.
Perkowski also provided an update on junior student representative applications: the committee will review applications at its July meeting and next year the application process will start after spring break.
