GHAPS reports strong ELA growth, sets graduation target and pursues college and industry ties

District staff told the Teaching & Learning Committee June 8 that the district aims for grades 9–12 to be 100% on track for graduation and for K–8 to show growth in ELA and math. Staff reported nearly all Grand Haven Area Public Schools showed high growth and high performance in ELA this year, and that math performance was uniformly high with most schools also showing high growth. A comparative report of last spring’s data to this spring will be presented to the Board of Education on Monday.
Superintendent Kristin Perkowski briefed the committee on adjustments to the Student Representative application timeline, saying next year the process will begin after spring break and that she is meeting with current student representatives to identify ways to strengthen their involvement at Board meetings.
Perkowski also said she and district administrators have been meeting with Dr. Selmon, president of Muskegon Community College, since December to align short- and long-term strategic goals and to expand collaboration. Staff are researching the skills local manufacturers need from graduates; Evink recently hosted area manufacturers to discuss possible work-based school programming to connect students with local industry needs.
