Montreat officials briefed residents on April 9 about the town's newly passed solid waste ordinance, which is scheduled to take effect Oct. 1, and outlined resources to help households comply.
Town Manager Savannah Parrish said the town has posted a set of questions and answers on its website (linked through the Montreat Minute) and offered to inspect individual properties to determine whether existing trash containment systems meet the new requirements. Parrish told the forum the town will work directly with residents who have systems that do not meet the ordinance standards.
At the public forum, several residents raised concerns about whether they would need to buy new bear-resistant containers. Philip Arnold asked how many properties would require replacements; Parrish said the town does not have a specific count but is aware that some systems already function well while others will need modification or replacement. Commissioner Tom Widmer announced a dedicated mailbox, trash@townofmontreat.org, for sanitation-related questions to streamline resident inquiries.
The town emphasized a supportive approach: staff will inspect systems on request and provide feedback about whether a given system is sufficient under the ordinance. The new rules are set to be enforced beginning Oct. 1; town staff encouraged residents to reach out early for guidance to avoid compliance issues.
