Town officials told the council June 8 that preparations for two summer events are progressing and that park maintenance work is scheduled around those events.
The Campobello America 250 Celebration is planned for July 3 with live music, a bicycle and golf cart parade, children’s activities, food vendors and family-friendly programming; organizers aim to conclude activities and begin cleanup by 9:30 p.m. to comply with the town’s park ordinance requiring activities to end by 10:00 p.m. Staff also reported the town received a $3,500 America 250 grant to purchase banners and promotional materials for the celebration.
National Night Out is scheduled for July 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and staff asked council to approve $300 from the hospitality budget to buy gift cards and other prizes from local businesses; the council approved the request unanimously. The Fire Department will provide hot dogs and refreshments as in prior years.
Council also authorized up to $1,000 to purchase rubber mulch and related materials for Gosnell Park to improve appearance and reduce future maintenance; staff noted contractor work on concrete trash can pads and step reconstruction is scheduled and may be timed to avoid disrupting the summer events.
The town’s text messaging system and other communications channels will be used to promote the events; staff said most event preparations will occur on the day of the events and volunteers will be needed for cleanup.
