Campobello council discusses local permitting for ATVs after state law changes

Police Chief Chad McNeill briefed the council on recently enacted state legislation that will, starting in November, permit certain all‑terrain and utility vehicles on public roadways if they meet equipment and operator requirements. Chief McNeill listed anticipated required features including turn signals, seat belts, liability insurance, registration/identification and minimum operator age.
Council members discussed adopting a local permitting and registration system — likely a town-issued decal — to keep records of vehicles operating within municipal boundaries and to assist law enforcement with identification. Staff will prepare a draft ordinance for council review at the July meeting.
No ordinance was adopted on June 8; the discussion was preliminary and focused on aligning a local permitting approach with the state requirements that take effect later in the year.
