Ward Two Fire District approves purchase of gas detectors; chief reports equipment, staffing and fuel updates

At the Ward Two Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners meeting on July 14, Chief Leonard presented the June fire chief's report and requested approval to buy replacement MSA gas detectors after warranty expiration.
Chief Leonard told the board that the department's MSA gas detectors were out of warranty. The district's regular vendor quoted $1,130 per unit; Mrs. Donna had established an Amazon Business tax-exempt account showing a price of $919 per unit. Commissioner George Gryder moved to approve purchases through Amazon Business and Commissioner Bill Wheelis seconded; the board approved the procurement 5-0.
In the chief's operational report, Chief Leonard said the department adjusted work hours to 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to take advantage of daylight, and that a monogramming vendor is delaying completion of shirts until machine repair. He reported the department is down one Jonsered chainsaw that needs carburetor repair and that a scheduled FETA class in Jonesboro was canceled.
Chief Leonard provided June response counts: 0 structure fires, 1 grass/woods fire, 1 motor vehicle accident, 7 tree-related calls, 0 medical calls, 1 carbon monoxide alarm and 1 dumpster fire. He reported using 197 gallons of fuel during June and having 128 gallons on hand as of July 1, 2026. Chief Leonard also requested signatures on a letter to First National Bank to remove Mr. Williams and Mr. Fallin as signatories and to add Vice Chairman Ricky Cash and James Leonard.
The board accepted the purchase agent's and chief's reports and moved into New Business after routine approvals. No additional training make-up or procurement timelines were specified at the meeting.
