River Ridge residents press board on plugged drains, warn of possible flooding

Shari Perkins, a River Ridge resident, told the Board of Supervisors on July 23 that drainage problems persist a week after an inlet was plugged and that water was overflowing at the Pinehurst triangle monument. Perkins said a neighbor, Fred Kronke, had emailed her that a retention pond between River 8 and River 9 "appears to be non‑functional; ponding is occurring and is nearly 1’ above the drain." Perkins said she would provide photographs and video to district staff.
District Engineer John Baker told the board the inlet had been plugged to stop water from one system backing into a lower system, but that removing the inlet’s pushing action left "no place for the water to go" and created what he described as "a very tiny pond in a pipe." Baker said resolving the issue will likely require further study and asked staff and residents to document flooding with photos or video.
The board directed staff to have the District Engineer inspect the drains firsthand and review potential fixes. Mr. Adams (District Manager) explained that the pipes at issue run between two houses, across the street and the golf course and into the ditch that flows to the Estero River, clarifying the outflow route the board will examine.
No formal motion adopting an immediate repair plan was recorded; the board kept infrastructure proposals, including an estimate for an inlet top, on the agenda for future consideration and asked staff to obtain additional contractor proposals.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for August 27, 2024, where staff updates and any proposed drainage actions could reappear on the agenda.
