For Duarte Unified that maximum would be $1,200 per month; the district’s current pay is $240 per month. Dr. Medrano noted the current annual cost to the district is about $14,400 and that moving to the $1,200 monthly maximum would raise the annual cost to about $72,000 — an increase of roughly $57,600.
Board members traded views on whether to adopt a large immediate increase, a phased approach, or to hold the matter until teachers and the community could weigh in. Mr. Reyes argued the increase is long overdue and urged placing the item on the next agenda to approve the maximum; other members said they supported an increase in principle but preferred public discussion and timing that allows unions and parents to respond. One board member suggested a more modest raise (no more than $500 per month) as a compromise. The superintendent said staff can return with more fiscal analysis and draft resolution language if the board desires. The board agreed to consider the item at its August 20 meeting when more community members and staff are expected to be available for public comment.
