The board discussed the costs of running a referendum (attorney and county election costs) versus renewing by board resolution, and several members favored public outreach before deciding.
"Let's get something in the paper and then vote on it next month," the chair said, and members agreed to prepare factual materials (MSBA flyers and FAQs were mentioned) and to consider a vote at the next board meeting. Staff noted the district cannot advocate for a ballot question but can post factual information and direct voters to MSBA materials.
No final board vote on renewal occurred during the meeting. Staff identified June 15 as the cutoff to renew administratively and said the county would need notification by the day after next month’s board meeting if the district wants a referendum placed on the ballot.
