North Carolina climate office releases heat-monitoring tools and shows rising overnight temperatures linked to increased risk

Researchers at the North Carolina State Climate Office told attendees at the state heat-season briefing that nights are warming across the state and that several new monitoring tools are now available to local officials.
Greg Tierney, a research scholar with the State Climate Office, emphasized that elevated overnight minimum temperatures are especially dangerous because the human body does not get a chance to cool. He cited published research and his office’s analyses linking nights above about 77°F to increased mortality and said those warm nights are becoming more frequent across coastal and urban sites.
"Elevated overnight minimum temperatures... increase human health and mortality risks," Tierney said, adding that recent work found "a 10 percent increase in mortality rates for nights with a minimum temperature above 77 degrees Fahrenheit." He showed station-level trends for New Bern, Wilmington and urban centers that point to multi-decade increases in warm nights and wet-bulb globe temperature metrics.
The climate office also introduced two tools for local use. Corey Davis, assistant state climatologist, demonstrated Station Scout (local station observations, historical thresholds, first/last day statistics) and the Southeast Heat Monitor, a daily monitoring tool that centers wet-bulb globe temperature in its categories but also displays heat index and air temperature, historical "hot zones" and prepackaged heat-health messaging for decision makers.
Utility for operations: Davis showed Station Scout’s thresholds tab for Raleigh–Durham, where the historical average was about 20 days/year at or above a 98°F heat index but recent years reached 37–39 days. The Heat Monitor offers three-day forecasts, hourly profiles and "hot-zone" context to help officials determine whether forecast heat is typical for that time of year or unusually high.
Practical guidance: The office encouraged officials to use both observational and forecast products to plan cooling-center schedules, staff rotations and public messaging; Davis highlighted export and screenshot features to make daily briefing products and social-media messaging easy to share.
Ending: State climate scientists urged jurisdictions to adopt localized thresholds and to incorporate wet-bulb and overnight-temperature context into summer readiness plans.
