Developer asks Brooklet to allow Statesboro to serve Hunnicutt Tract; council weighs service-area control

Developer Hagan Road Investments told the Brooklet City Council it would be more practical and less costly for the Hunnicutt Tract at 21015 Highway 80 East to receive water and sewer service from the City of Statesboro because Statesboro infrastructure is closer. The developer said Statesboro has sufficient capacity to serve the tract.
Mayor L.W. "Nicky" Gwinnett, Jr. and several council members cautioned that the tract currently lies within Brooklet’s service delivery area under existing agreements and warned that allowing another jurisdiction to provide service could limit Brooklet’s long-term growth and delivery authority. Council members cited Brooklet’s limited sewer capacity and elevation constraints as practical concerns in terms of extending service directly.
Council did not make a decision and directed staff to gather more information, including project scope, timelines and the number of proposed homes, and to initiate discussions with City of Statesboro leadership to explore cooperative solutions. City Attorney Ben Perkins advised any agreement should be formalized in writing to protect Brooklet’s delivery interests.
