Brooks holds public hearing on amended FY2025 budget; second reading set for Dec. 15

Lorey Spohr, town clerk and finance officer, presented an amended FY2025 budget during a brief public hearing Nov. 17 and said the town’s balanced budget would increase from $446,710 to $580,221.
Spohr summarized the changes as $133,511 in additional revenue and $100,504 in additional expenses. She identified the primary revenue sources as receipts from the 115th Brooks Heritage Celebration, local option sales tax (LOST), TAVT and the Insurance Premium Tax; added expenses include LMIG work, town attorney fees and capital improvements. Spohr said $24,543 generated by the heritage celebration is restricted and will not be included in the town’s unaudited addition to the fund balance.
Spohr calculated that the amendment would add about $8,464 to the FY2024 audited fund balance of $524,898, leaving roughly $533,362 in unrestricted funds — about 11 months of operating expenses, she said. No action was taken at the hearing; Spohr told the council a second reading and a request for approval would be presented at the Dec. 15, 2025 council meeting.
Mayor Daniel Langford and council members had no questions during the hearing; Langford opened and closed the hearing within minutes.
Next steps: the council is expected to consider the second reading and a formal adoption vote at the Dec. 15 meeting.
