Brooks council sets 2025 meeting calendar, hears reports on market, library and town issues

At its Nov. 18 meeting, the Brooks Town Council unanimously approved the proposed 2025 meeting calendar and received a series of routine reports from town staff and committees.
Town Clerk Lorey Spohr presented the calendar, which schedules council meetings for the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., with the January and February meetings moved to later Mondays due to holidays. Council Member Todd Speer moved to approve the dates and Council Member Scott Israel seconded; the vote was unanimous.
Committee reports included a mayoral update that Mayor Daniel Langford will attend a mayoral breakfast and a meeting about a proposed property tax law. Planning and Zoning had no items to report. Recreation representative Chris Moody said the Brooks Bash will be held Nov. 24 and asked the council to recognize cheerleaders who won a recent competition.
Library staff K. Bradley said several new families checked out books and reported that the cemetery has two full lots and several cremation lots available for sale. Town Clerk Lorey Spohr reported that recent removal and stump-grinding work at 115 Church Alley cost $2,700. She also asked residents to report missed trash pickups and said 2025 business license renewals will be mailed before Dec. 1.
Finance figures for October were presented by staff: LOST (local option sales tax) revenue for October was up 0.35% compared with the previous October and year-to-date LOST was up 7.95%. 2023 SPLOST figures were reported as up 1.76% for the September period and 13.32% year-to-date for 2023 SPLOST collections, as presented by the finance officer.
The town manager updated the council on transportation matters, noting the county's Safe Streets for All online comment period has closed and a draft report is expected by March. The county engineer will update the comprehensive trail plan and prioritize projects with approved funding; planning funds were allocated for the rail-trail project through town.
The manager also described a Nov. 9 incident when Liberty Tech parents parked in the Brooks Memorial Cemetery during a funeral. The manager said prior offers to coordinate parking with the school were not implemented and that staff will install posts and a chain at the cemetery entrance during school events to prevent recurrence.
The meeting concluded with a positive report on the Brooks Market turnout and with no other business; the council adjourned at 6:52 p.m.
