Police chief reports two full-time resignations, new equipment in operation

Chief Krause updated the council on staffing and equipment in the Police Department during the Jan. 14 meeting.
Krause reported that Officer Jacob Klynstra will resign his full-time position effective Jan. 27, 2026, and Officer Benjamin Mulder will resign full-time effective Feb. 1, 2026; both officers indicated availability for part-time work. The department has posted the job, received some applications, and scheduled a first interview. Krause noted that the Lake Michigan College (LMC) academy for new officers begins March 9, 2026.
Krause also said the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) funding to the department has dropped from $25,000 to $20,000. He reported that Axon body and in-car cameras are installed and operational, the Durango fleet vehicle is being outfitted, and the department received an invoice and tracking number for LiDAR equipment; the chief has signed up for LiDAR certification.
The minutes do not record discussion of budget adjustments to offset the MCOLES reduction or a timetable for new hires beyond the first interview.
