The council approved hiring recommendations for the fire and EMS departments and accepted an EMS resignation during routine personnel business.
Chair (speaker 3) moved to hire Lauren Prophet for a firefighter-EMT position pending background checks; the motion passed. Council also approved hiring Abby Larson for an EMT-only position. “So, I’ll ask for a motion to approve the hiring of Lauren Prophet for the firefighter EMT position pending background checks,” the chair said before the vote.
Council also considered and approved the resignation letter of Lisa Gert from the EMS department. Earlier in the meeting councilors had asked why a prior resignation had been tabled; staff and a councilor explained the city’s conflict process, saying that when council liaisons are also involved in a department, votes can be restricted to avoid conflicts of interest. One councilor called the result “absurd” in conversation, and staff reiterated the rule is meant to prevent self-serving votes.
Some members recorded abstentions on personnel votes as noted in the minutes; the council carried all motions as presented.
