Michiana approves water contract with Michigan City; pump and water-main work scheduled

Council member Brian Cassidy made the motion to approve the contract; Council member Mike Mumper seconded it and the council approved it by roll call, 3–0. The contract approval was taken up under old business after routine reports and fund approvals.
Council member Mike Mumper, who presented the water update, said Merritt Engineering is finishing plans for the Creek work and asked that the village start the project in October. “The new pump will be installed after Labor Day,” Mumper said. He estimated the water-main work would take two to three weeks and said asphalt restoration could be completed by mid-November.
The water projects are part of a larger $620,000 grant the village is using for upgrades. The council did not specify construction contractors or a final construction schedule at the meeting beyond the engineering timeline; council members asked staff to proceed with planning and scheduling so work can begin in the proposed window.
During public comment a resident asked for clarification on the water contract; the council referred the question to staff for follow-up. No vote was recorded to delay or amend the contract approval.
The council’s next regular meeting is expected in September, when staff may report back with final project schedules and contractor details.
