Ware County applies for scrap‑tire amnesty grant, tentatively schedules Nov. 14 collection event

Ware County staff briefed commissioners on the state STAR (Scrap Tire Abatement Reimbursement) grant and proposed a county collection event to give residents a free option to dispose of household tires.
Staff said the grant reimburses hauling and processing at up to $4 per passenger‑tire equivalent and will reimburse up to $75,000 in a state fiscal year. The county must submit an application at least 90 days before an event; staff proposed a weekend amnesty event and suggested the second Saturday in November (Nov. 14) to allow time for hauler arrangements, permits and logistics.
An approved certified processor/hauler in Baxley will receive collected tires; staff explained a 26‑foot box truck can carry approximately 400 tires and estimated reimbursement would cover hauling/processing but not county overtime or labor. Staff noted the grant allows multiple events in a state fiscal year and can be used for right‑of‑way cleanups if the county chooses to organize those separately.
Commissioners agreed to pursue the grant and tentatively schedule the November event; staff will finalize an approved hauler, the location and the permit for secure, tarped storage during collection, then return to the board with final dates and operational plans.
