Ware County commissioners voted July 13 to apply for a Georgia Department of Natural Resources grant that can fund up to $750,000 toward recreation improvements at the Trembling Earth Recreation Complex.
Recreation staff presented the grant window (Aug. 3–Oct. 16) and said the award requires a county match. "The DNR grant is a funding opportunity for us to get up to $750,000, and then we could match, up to $750,000," the presenter said. Commissioners discussed whether to apply for the full amount or for a smaller phased package; options included building four to eight initial pickleball courts with future phases added in later grant cycles.
Commissioners noted SPLOST recreation funds could provide the local match and directed staff to confirm available SPLOST balances. Several commissioners favored applying for the full grant if doing so would not jeopardize other planned projects; others urged a conservative approach (start with four to six courts) to avoid overcommitting county dollars.
The board approved the motion to apply for the grant and asked staff to refine cost estimates, consider bathroom and ADA needs, and return with a detailed funding plan for the match and phasing.
