The Delano Park and Recreation Commission heard an update April 22 on work at Sunset Community Park, where City Council has approved a bid to perform mass‑grading and construction is expected to begin in spring and finish by midsummer.
City Administrator Phil Kern said the mass‑grading contract is approximately $460,000 and that the remaining budget for playground equipment and related site work is about $290,000. Kern said the proposed playground layout would sit on the park’s east‑end hill, adjacent to the Legacy Woods neighborhood.
Kern presented a proposal from Landscape Structures for a Volo Aire playground structure at the site. Commission members raised concerns that the Volo Aire’s design leaned heavily toward vertical play and asked staff to request alternative models with more horizontal play options from Landscape Structures. Kern said staff would follow up with the vendor and may call a special park commission meeting to review additional options.
The commission did not vote on final playground equipment at the meeting. The next steps are for staff to solicit alternate playground models from the vendor and for commissioners to consider those options at a future regular or specially called meeting.
