Coffey County reviews 2027 budget requests, appoints housing authority member and tables equipment bid

At its June 1 meeting the commission heard 2027 budget requests from the Chamber ($150,000), Transportation ($300,000, up $25,000), and the Housing Authority ($260,000, down $25,000); it appointed Brian Payer to the Housing Authority Board, approved two payroll hires, accepted a $12,000 signage grant and tabled a $304,644 equipment bid.
The Coffey County Commission on June 1 heard 2027 budget requests and routine administrative items. Chari Bauman, Chamber of Commerce Director, requested $150,000 for 2027 (the same as 2026). Coffey County Transportation Director Brittany Hawkins requested $300,000 for 2027, an increase of $25,000 over 2026. Housing Authority Director Lynzie Stukey presented a 2027 request of $260,000, a decrease of $25,000 from 2026.
The board appointed Brian Payer to the Coffey County Housing Authority Board to fill an unexpired term ending Oct. 26, 2027; the appointment was moved by Wayde Thomsen and seconded by Steve McCurry, and the motion passed. The commission also approved CP-2 payroll notices for two new highway department hires: Jason Bailey, Light Equipment Operator, wage $20.80 effective May 27, 2026; and Patrick McSwain, Heavy Equipment Operator, wage $22.02 effective June 1, 2026.
On procurement, the board considered a bid from Murphy Tractor & Equipment for one 2026 John Deere 260P (including a five-year/5,000-hour warranty) at a purchase price of $304,644 to be paid from the Special Bridge Fund; the motion to accept the bid was tabled. Economic Development Director Jenny Tatman reported a $12,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to assist with signage for three downtown Burlington business signs.
The commission entered executive session at 12:46 p.m. for 10 minutes to discuss non-elected personnel and a candidate for IT Director, then resumed regular session at 12:56 p.m. The board scheduled warrant and voucher signing for June 29 and adjourned at 1:04 p.m.
