State Senator Bobby Hennig, who attended the meeting, presented the family with a North Carolina flag that had been flown over the State Capitol. "The state of North Carolina presents this North Carolina flag in memory of James Owen Etheridge, County Commissioner," Hennig said, noting the flag had been flown on June 23, 2026 and was signed by Governor Josh Stein.
Family members thanked the board; a relative told commissioners that Etheridge loved the county and that he is now "in no more pain," reflecting the family's grief. The board's action was unanimous by voice vote and the commissioners said they will continue to recognize his contributions in county work and memorials.
The presentation and remarks closed with a handoff of the resolution and the flag to the family; the board then moved on to other agenda items.
