Brooklyn Schools honor state-record discus thrower; STEAM teacher outlines greenhouse projects after outdoor classroom grant not awarded

The Brooklyn Board of Education recognized student and athlete Rocco Asermelly at its June 24 meeting for academic and athletic achievements, including a Connecticut middle-school state discus record of 161 feet, 11 inches. Meeting minutes record that Rocco maintained high honors and will attend Woodstock Academy in the fall.
The Board also recognized Brooklyn Elementary School STEAM teacher Sean Maloney for expanding hands-on learning through the school's greenhouse program and student gardening projects. Maloney described summer activities: second-graders took home sunflower seedlings, third-graders took home cucumber plants to observe pollination, and fourth-graders took home tomato plants to grow over the summer. Maloney said he has contacted Page's Tree Service about tree-stump seating and plans to ask Lowe's for help constructing a 12-by-16-foot gazebo and a Zen garden as part of an outdoor learning space.
Superintendent Raynor told the Board the district's Outdoor Classroom grant application was not awarded. Board members commended Maloney for creating meaningful interdisciplinary learning experiences that connect science, agriculture and environmental stewardship.
The recognitions were recorded as part of the district's "Brooklyn's Best" agenda item; no formal vote was required for the recognitions.
