Yarmouth health board recommends safety conditions for SRS Building Products' special-permit filing

The Yarmouth Board of Health voted May 18 to recommend that the Zoning Board of Appeals attach specific health and safety conditions to SRS Building Products' planned use of a Route 28 site.

Eliza Cox told the board that SRS plans to lease the space and operate a small delivery fleet consisting of two flatbed trucks, two forklifts and two Moffett trucks; forklifts and Moffett trucks will be serviced on-site by a third-party professional, and no vehicle washing will occur at the location. Cox said the company expects to keep 2 to 3 gallons of gasoline on-site for equipment and will store hazardous materials in a designated hazardous-materials room on spill-proof pallets with secondary containment (transcript wording on containment percentage was unclear).

Carl Lawson, in a staff memo, emphasized that the proposal does not include on-site use, processing or disposal of hazardous waste and recommended that the Emergency Spill Response Plan be posted conspicuously and that employees receive training on spill procedures. The board's recommendation incorporates Carlson's memo and the Health Department's suggested conditions.

Mary Craig moved that the board recommend to the Zoning Board the Health Department's regulatory requirements as stated in the memo and the department's recommendations: limit maximum onsite storage of toxic or hazardous materials to 400 gallons total; require a detailed spill-containment plan be posted and staff trained; and prohibit vehicle washing on-site. The motion was seconded by Laurance Venezia, DVM, and passed unanimously.

Cox said SRS plans to present before the Zoning Board of Appeals on June 25 and aims to open the new store in late fall 2026. The board's recommendation is advisory to the Zoning Board as part of the special-permit review process.
