The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission met May 11 in the Lyndon House Community Room and heard staff updates on multiple public‑art projects and upcoming community events.
Staff reported that the Costa building mural was finished in April and that community center murals were completed on April 21. Work on gates for Bishop Park is in fabrication, with installation targeted for this summer. Staff said an artist has been selected to paint murals at the Morton Theater. The commission was also notified that the mural at Akins Ford Arena, “A Blossoming Ode to Georgia’s Musical History,” won a Bronze award at a national mural competition.
Commission staff said a proposed new site for the Linnentown project is pending approval by the Mayor and Commission at the Mayors & Commission meeting scheduled for June 2, 2026. No final decision on site approval was recorded at the commission meeting.
Upcoming public‑art opportunities were listed: a project at Memorial Park Pond, a mural for the new eastside library, and an open call for new bench designs. Staff noted the benches call may include roughly a dozen distinct bench designs and emphasized accessibility for artists in the selection criteria.
The commission also announced local outreach opportunities including Shakespeare in the Park at Dudley, Thursday artist talks at the Lyndon House, and an 'Athens Got Talent' event supporting The Cottage on May 16 at Terrapin.
Votes at a glance: The commission approved the meeting minutes (motion by Jessica Smith; seconded by Elise Robinson) and later agreed to adjourn (motion by Linnea Ionno; seconded by Jessica Smith). Both motions were recorded as unanimous. The meeting adjourned at 6:42 p.m.
The meeting record notes staff and ex‑officio attendees including Tatiana Veneruso and SPLOST liaison Madhuri Angadi, and records Matt Stefek as the drafter of the minutes. New commission members were welcomed and reminded to complete BAC training online.
