Planning board asks Select Board and forester to avoid orchard, flags steep driveways at Barry Orchard timber plan

At its April 21 meeting, the Temple Planning Board discussed a timber-harvest plan identified as “Barry Orchard” on North Road and recorded that the Select Board had signed an Intent to Cut.
Ken Caisse, the planning-board member serving ex officio from the Select Board, noted the Select Board’s signature on the Intent to Cut. Kent Perry reported he met with the forester, reviewed the logging map, and “encouraged the forester to avoid the orchard and the stream.” The board noted that much of the orchard near the stream lies in a mapped floodplain.
Committee member Bruce Kullgren Jr. raised concerns about steep grades where proposed driveways on the paved portion of North Road would begin, saying the approaches “start on a very steep grade” and would need to be flattened to meet road requirements. Bruce repeated an earlier suggestion that a single shared driveway — potentially tied to a Planned Residential Development — might reduce impacts.
Board members expressed support for documenting their concerns in writing. Members favored Chair Russ Huntley sending a letter to the property owners, the forester, and the surveyor outlining the board’s requests and concerns; that letter and the associated logging map were included in the meeting attachments.
The board did not take a formal vote on land-use approvals at this meeting; the item was recorded for continued observation and follow-up correspondence.
