Board Chair Russ Huntley said he was concerned that the maps provided during the presentation “do not include elevation,” a detail he argued is important for determining whether specific properties lie within a regulated floodplain. Committee member Bruce Kullgren Jr. said the proposed ordinance language should not be overly cumbersome for residents because “the majority of residents are not in flood zones.”
Members noted two practical consequences of adopting a floodplain ordinance: residents would be required to indicate on building permits whether a property is in a floodplain, and the town would become eligible for FEMA funds. The board also recorded that adoption would allow property owners access to discounted flood insurance programs.
No motion to adopt the ordinance was made at the meeting. The NHOPD presentation was included in the meeting attachments for members’ review and the board left the item on the old-business list for further consideration at a future meeting.
