Benton County to explore pilot using Housing Support funds for up to 12 community apartments

The Benton County Board of Commissioners on April 7 authorized Human Services staff to investigate a pilot program to use Housing Support funds for up to 12 individually leased apartments.
Human Services Director Sandi Shoberg said Benton County has traditionally authorized Housing Support funds for foster care, intensive residential services and program-based facilities but that roughly half of Minnesota counties now permit Housing Support for community programs (services attached to individually leased apartments). Shoberg told commissioners the pilot would not require additional staff and that the county’s responsibilities would be to authorize state funds, investigate service complaints and conduct quality assurance checks.
Commissioner Scott Johnson moved and Jared Gapinski seconded a motion to let Human Services investigate the option for a pilot; the motion carried unanimously.
If implemented, the pilot would add community-based housing options using state Housing Support funds; funding would remain state-administered and Benton County said it expects limited incremental cost beyond staff time for oversight.
