Board hears facilities, technology and CTE updates; gym floor work to close gym for weeks

District staff reported that a gym-floor contractor is expected in early July and that the gym will likely be closed three weeks to a month for curing; the board also heard technology, CTE consortium and arts-program updates and was invited to volunteer as chaperones for student travel.
Mr. Nickens told the board that the contractor for the gym floor is expected to arrive between July 8 and July 11 and that the gym will be closed for about three weeks to a month while the new floor cures. "When he's here, we'll shut it down for 3 weeks to a month just to make sure that it gets cured," Mr. Nickens said, and he praised custodial staff for recent deep-cleaning work and for replacing gym light bulbs.
He described challenges with water intrusion under bleachers after mopping and noted that spots on the floor that were previously sanded have held up better. "We get really guarded with water, even mopping the bleachers...because you couple things that I've seen happen is...water was dripping out," he said, explaining why the district limits liquids in the gym while balancing usability for events.
The staff member reported that Chromebooks ordered in April have been received and set up for next school year; the district will solicit quotes in July for additional Chromebooks, iPads and Chromebook carts for the middle school and plans staff training on Zoom and smart boards in August. "We're gonna work on getting...quotes for you guys in July for getting the remaining Chromebooks that we're anticipating that we'll need, along with new iPads and then a couple Chromebook carts," the staff member said.
Mr. Manning updated the board on CTE planning: the Southeast CTE Consortium is moving forward with on-site training for fall and spring; the district needs to identify a program coordinator and he asked Mr. Negus to take on that extra duty, and he invited Nicole Taylor to lead one of the professional-learning projects. Mr. Nickens added that chaperones will be needed as students travel to consortium events, asking board members and the public to volunteer.
Mr. Manning also noted several recent grant submissions (Title I/II consolidated, special education, Carl Perkins) and a list of education bills that have become law and may affect district operations, including HB 28, HB 27, SB 146, SB 187, SB 23 and HB 39.
The Board discussed scheduling a review of the Internet use policy for the week of the 12th and confirmed planning for that agenda item in July. The meeting then moved on to action items and later adjourned.
The district will proceed with scheduling the gym work and follow facility and safety procedures during the closure; staff will solicit technology quotes and schedule trainings ahead of the school year.
